There are some things I will never do.
I will never guarantee admission to any university. Nobody can.
Anyone who does is shortchanging your child because they have no control over whether an application is successful or not. That’s entirely in the hands of the admissions officer at each college or university.
I will never write a student’s essay or personal statement.
If a student can’t tell a story about themself, they’re not ready for university. Even if the story is as simple as “I’m curious about X and Y, but I’m not sure yet what I want to do with X and Y,” that’s still a story A child has to know internally who they are – or who they want to become – before they can tell their story to someone else.
I will never suggest a shortcut around an application rule.
This is not me being difficult. It protects your child. Besides, admissions officers read thousands of essays every year and know an adult-written essay when they see one.
More importantly, a student who arrives at a university that was never the right fit has a hard first year. If the student doesn’t know how their story fits within a university’s context, then I can’t know how they fit there, either.
I follow NACAC and IECA standards of practice. Honest advice serves families better than comfortable advice.
